TOSHIBA SUCKS

Just realized that my Satelite Toshiba notebook is a dead trap for me. I bought it back in 2006 and it was a good “light” model, it came with only 512MB RAM. It was a “surf” model, one of those quick notebook you buy just to check emails and do some writing work. It was ok back then, its ok today.

The thing is, I tried to updated from 512MB RAM to 1,5GB RAM (bought 1GB RAM today) and it doesn’t work, it only shows me 894MB RAM.

My crazy brother look the problem up at Google and got like 20 people with the same prolem, the thing is Toshiba doesn’t allow you to upgrade that slot, they want you to take it to their support service ($50 USD) for it. One could think “I can do that!” but, you can’t. They made it impossible for the user, they leave you 1 slot (up to 1GB) and the other slot that has the 512MB of RAM is HIDDEN, sometimes under the keyboard depending the notebook model.

The trick is to pay them an extra $50-$100 USD to install 2GB… which is idiotic, because you could do it yourself (if you could know where the damn hidden slot is).

So, my advice: don’t buy Toshiba; they do this kind of stuff just to earn $50 bucks, which is patetic.

Toshiba: fuck you too!
P.S. My Notebook has now 894MB RAM, but I will use my nice EEEPC to do my surf work instead of my Toshiba. Asus has my respect!

Hi Kurt,

I certainly agree with you. Toshiba seems to lag behind in terms of technology.

However, I'm quite surprised with all the issues being reported on Toshiba Laptops. I'll definitely use your advise.

Its the only laptop that had me chased out of a meeting due to its "annoying sound". Ive never hated something as much as that laptop. Toshiba, please materialize into a pig in Palestine.

Toshiba has a lot of products, well maybe some of their products sucks but not all of their products. The memory chips are very easily replaced with a screwdriver. All you have to do is take out the keyboard. Which, if you read the manual that is easily downloaded from Toshiba's website, is not that hard to do.

Toshiba really knows the word business. But they didn't know the negative impact. It's really annoying to let them do the simple job at a huge cost when in fact we know how to do it ourselves. Hmmm, glad that I come across this post I planned to buy a laptop and want Toshiba as it is made in Japan. Now, I changed my mind.

I hate Toshiba to the extent its possible to hate a company. Support sucks, the product sucks. I bought a tablet that had really impressive features, but lo and behold, Toshiba quality would soon descend upon my world, so it started to make loud noises, boot times went crazy and after multiple formating sessions to cure it, it went dead. Its the only laptop that had me chased out of a meeting due to its "annoying sound". Ive never hated something as much as that laptop. Toshiba, please materialize into a pig in Palestine.

My toshiba has way too many problem in the span of 6 months that i bought it. First it was the motherboard that cause my laptop unable to start up. I sent it to Toshiba. Second, for some forsaken reason my motherboard went down again in which I sent it in again. After that for some crappy reason one of my memory chip fell out after two day of receiving my toshiba.

Had issues with Toshiba four months later as it kept dropping the wireless card and had to constantly be reloaded. Tech was easy to reach but the process took a good hour each time.

Ya Fuck Toshiba. I bought a laptop in 2007 for college and it has been the most piece of fucking shit i serioulsy cannot stand it!!! HP printer software I loaded on to the computer had problems but unistall wouldn't work. I had to reload the entire system. I got an error message when trying to upload Toshiba upgrades (now that really gives one confidence in the product).

I bought a Toshiba Notebook at www.toshiba.ca. It stopped working after 32 days, so I couldn't return it. It took them 5 weeks to get the replacement part. In a situation like this when they do not have the part, they should give me my money back or send a new computer.

I will NEVER by a Toshiba again. I still don't have my computer, but when I get it back, I am going to burn it on camera and put the video up on a website I am creating to tell Canadians not to buy a Toshiba.

Well, I aint any kind of pro at computers, but I know that what you're talking doesnt make sense. obviously the slot is under the keyboard to accomodate other features in a compact design.
But yes, from another "sensible" point of view, Toshiba is very bad compared to most other brands.

Calm down my friend. No, I'm not an IT guy, that's true. I'm a regular
user at most. This toshiba model actually don't allow a regular user
to replace or install any extra memory (it says it in its manual).

Buy a $2,100+ Toshiba Laptop, Spend 3 ½ Years Sending It to Toshiba Repair Depots Eight Times, and Wind Up with Inoperable Laptop and Offer of $700.32 to Shut Up and Go Away

6/8/2006, I bought a laptop from Toshiba Direct for $2,139, and paid Toshiba Direct something extra for a 2-year extended warranty. The laptop failed in a week (blue screen of death). I sent it to repair, as directed, 8 times in 3 years. It has never been operable. This junker, Serial #66058553W, sits on my desk today, unable to turn on or operate.

Despite following instructions from Toshiba Customer Service, I am unable to get them to deliver me a computer in working order. I have had effectively no use of a $2,139 computer. Requested replacement after 3rd repair under warranty failed in 12/2006. Denied, told to send to repair depot again. 6/30/2007, requested replacement as computer still did not work after one year of repeated failed repair efforts. Denied. Computer always comes back with same problem: Turn it on, it turns itself off, turns itself on, turns itself off, etc., about a dozen times, then goes to blue screen of death.

After 4th Toshiba Repair Depot failure, in July 2007, was told by Customer Service Toshiba "could not" replace unless Repair Depot declared it "uneconomical to repair." Repair Depot refuses to declare it so. Customer Service sighs, “Unfortunately, that means our hands our tied. We cannot replace it without that declaration from Repair Depot.”

Told to send it to Nexicore, Toshiba’s “top of the line, VIP repair depot.” 2 more failures to repair, at Nexicore.

Now Toshiba says it is responsibility of Extended Warranty company to replace computer, and Extended Warranty company says it is up to Toshiba to repair. Both deny responsibility.

John Kelly (1-888-598-7801, TCRC@tais.toshiba.com), Corp CR SrCM, Executive Referrals at Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. emailed me on 12/10/2009, and made a "Final Offer" ultimatum--take $700.32, or give Nexicore one final chance to repair, with no recourse if repair fails a 9th time. Threatened to put notes in my file instructing Customer Service about "Final Offer" and telling them to do nothing more for me. Then he did so.

Toshiba failed to repair and refused to replace the junker while under warranty, Repair Depot refuses to declare "uneconomical to repair," especially now that the most recent failures to repair occurred at Nexicore, thus blocking Customer Service from authorizing replacement, and neither local Authorized Repair, nor Repair Depot, nor Nexicore could repair it, despite 8 opportunities. Toshiba Direct cannot deliver a working laptop, nor repair it so it does work, but they can set up a complicated circle of divisions and separate companies to avoid responsibility.

Toshiba WILL NOT stand behind its product, even if you buy it from Toshiba Direct.

I myself heard many stories about the toshiba's issues on many other programmes that could not work well with it.Well,some toshiba's are great,depending on the models that we chose.

Ram is always an issue on older models, I have an old compaq that will not take any new o.s and is basicaly a boat anchor at this point. Nothing we can do but upgrade to a new machine!

The same thing has happened to my mom and a friend at work with thte same computer. Toshiba denies knowledge of a common problem with this computer and WILL NOT make it right. TOSHIBA SUCKS. NEVER, EVER< EVER buy a Toshiba computer.

I have heard many complaints about the toshiba services too.It wasnt that pleasant comparing to other brands notebook we saw in the market.It was always ok when using it at first,but as lvter on goes, it gets slower and the rams on the memories just would not work as it shows.I myself heard many stories about the toshiba's issues on many other programmes that could not work well with it.Well,some toshiba's are great,depending on the models that we chose.Yes,everyone would agree that as time comes,per person would afford to buy the best model as could not afford with many notebooks so we must carefully make our own choices.

The fact that you cannot upgrade the graphics chipset at ALL (to my knowledge, and to the knowledge of many tech forum rats found via Google) is absolutely excruciating, considering I am a college gamer: It's a 128MB MSI Radeon Express M200, which I personally refer to as the McDonald's of "modern" graphics cards, in that it gives me the shits everytime I think about it. I can't even run Half-Life 2, which is absolutely pitiful and inexcusable in my mind, considering that game's engine was supposedly designed to run even on relatively low-end systems around the time of its release.

It turns out, unsurprisingly, that he was right. The power jack started coming loose again after about a month and a half. I was in the middle of a bunch of things so I didn’t really feel like messing with it so I just opened up the computer and threw some more solder on it. When the power jack started jiggling again a few weeks later, I knew I had to do something better to fix it. So I picked up a desoldering sucker and some desoldering wick.

I bought a tablet that had really impressive features, but lo and behold, Toshiba quality would soon descend upon my world, so it started to make loud noises, boot times went crazy and after multiple formating sessions to cure it, it went dead. Its the only laptop that had me chased out of a meeting due to its "annoying sound".

I bought a Toshiba laptop in April of 2009 and this piece of crap has never worked correctly. Best Buy refused to help because I didn't buy their extended warranty. Hell, the thing is only 6 mos. old. Toshiba has turned their back on me too. Don't ever buy anything from Best Buy or Toshiba.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite P-100 three years and five months ago, and it was inoperable less than a week later. It has worked three days in three and a half years. The rest of its time has been in transit to Toshiba repair depots (7 times!), each time coming back in the same, inoperable condition. When I power it up, it unexpectedly powers down then powers up then powers down then power up [REPEAT 10 TIMES], then goes to blue screen of death. Toshiba declines to replace it, just asks that it be sent back to the repair depot for an eighth time. When I purchased it, I paid to have Toshiba load up MS Windows XP and MS Office SBE 2003 edition. On the last trip to the repair depot, they removed the Office Suite I paid for, and replaced it with a trial version. When I complained about that new insult, they said, "Go buy another edition of Office." DO NOT PURCHASE A TOSHIBA LAPTOP! I will not, never again.

I have U405 Satillite. Complete garbage. I can easily see that the laptop was sold before it was completely thought out. Talking about Movie Review on tv show and Politics
.Constant crashing. "USB Charge" feature never worked on anything ever. Worst of all recording audio mix on sound card has been blocked off. I called Toshiba regarding the issue and a Talking about Film Review, Law, Life, Politics and Entertainment possible driver fix and they wanted to send me to a repair shop. Idiots! I thought TOshiba was a great laptop, I was wrond, and will make it clear to everyone who asks me.Talking about Movie Review on tv show and Politics

Furthermore the screen had been opened up and there was loads of crap stuck between the LCD and the sensor screen. The whole laptop was filthy. I'd make 'em clean it if I could be bothered to wait half a year to get my computer back.

Had issues with it four months later as it kept dropping the wireless card and had to constantly be reloaded. Tech was easy to reach but the process took a good hour each time. I did not want to do without them to make sure they had a record. Then I developed driver issues. Took to authorized repair shop Toshiba sent me to. They reloaded software still had issues.

HP printer software I loaded on to the computer had problems but unistall wouldn't work. I had to reload the entire system. I got an error message when trying to upload Toshiba upgrades (now that really gives one confidence in the product).

I think that Toshiba doesn’t allow you to upgrade that slot, they want you to take it to their support service $50 for it. One could think I can do that! but, you can’t.

So there you go. Info from the manual. You can't find it by yourself
being a regular user; its not just open a small door and plug it in,
like with other notebooks. Its "hidden" for some weird purpose which
no ones really care.

I really refuse to agree with you on this.. Toshiba is know for its high quality in products.. however its only common that out of a million machines produced, one or 2 turns out to be defective and you seem to have been the unlucky one!

I had a similar issue with Dell laptops. Found out over 100k users with the same model line had the same issue. Of course there wasn't a recall!! I switched to gateway and couldn't be happier!

My Toshiba Satellite complete with MS Vista is, next to a Dell computer I once was stupid enough to buy, the worst computer I have ever had. Why? Within months the hard drive crashed and was replaced. HP printer software I loaded on to the computer had problems but unistall wouldn't work. I had to reload the entire system. I got an error message when trying to upload Toshiba upgrades (now that really gives one confidence in the product). Finally, I was unable to upload MS upgrades and the computer would not shut down. I guess when you combine crappy programming (MS) with a crappy computer you get...CRAP. I finally bought a Mac about a year ago and I haven't had one problem with it. My use of the Toshiba continued to decline. And after the recent problems with the computer I decided to junk it. That is exactly what the piece of junk deserves. The crime, in other words, now fits the punishment.

I have U405 Satillite. Complete garbage. I can easily see that the laptop was sold before it was completely thought out. Constant crashing. "USB Charge" feature never worked on anything ever. Worst of all recording audio mix on sound card has been blocked off. I called Toshiba regarding the issue and a possible driver fix and they wanted to send me to a repair shop. Idiots! I thought TOshiba was a great laptop, I was wrond, and will make it clear to everyone who asks me.

We still are facing up all this economic downturns that result into too much poverty, starvation and unemployment to some of our people. But on the other hand some jobs still exist even in times of hard life. One of this is a Realtor. It is said being realtor is a good career. A realtor during a housing boom can rake in the cash, especially if they’re able to work in an expensive market. Take Marin County for instance – Marin County is the county of the North Bay Area around San Francisco. Unfortunately, it is also close to Oakland. However, with the housing market being what it is, you can't get a house for really cheap in California with poor credit, even with a payday loan to help out with a deposit. Still, some in the Realtor trade are resorting to installment loans to keep afloat. Just try to save more and always keep in mind that too many expenses is unwanted at this time of recession.

I have the Portege R400 which Toshiba gave me. It lasted about six months before it broke and after taking six weeks to "fix it" I got it back with a vanilla HDD and no OS (the R400 has no CD/DVD drives). Furthermore the screen had been opened up and there was loads of crap stuck between the LCD and the sensor screen. The whole laptop was filthy. I'd make 'em clean it if I could be bothered to wait half a year to get my computer back.

I hate Toshiba to the extent its possible to hate a company. Support sucks, the product sucks. I bought a tablet that had really impressive features, but lo and behold, Toshiba quality would soon descend upon my world, so it started to make loud noises, boot times went crazy and after multiple formating sessions to cure it, it went dead. Its the only laptop that had me chased out of a meeting due to its "annoying sound". Ive never hated something as much as that laptop. Toshiba, please materialize into a pig in Palestine.

Agreed. I have a Satellite A105 from '06. However, I don't understand why you can't upgrade the RAM, this piece of shit I have currently possesses 2.5 gigs that appear in my System Information just fine... perhaps this model is an exception to the rule?
Don't get me wrong. The fact that you cannot upgrade the graphics chipset at ALL (to my knowledge, and to the knowledge of many tech forum rats found via Google) is absolutely excruciating, considering I am a college gamer: It's a 128MB MSI Radeon Express M200, which I personally refer to as the McDonald's of "modern" graphics cards, in that it gives me the shits everytime I think about it. I can't even run Half-Life 2, which is absolutely pitiful and inexcusable in my mind, considering that game's engine was supposedly designed to run even on relatively low-end systems around the time of its release. Seriously, at this point, the only thing holding me back from expanding this computer's gaming potential is failed graphics hardware: the Core Duo 1.6GHz clocks in at 2.75GHz, or so I'm told by systemrequirementslab.com (there is a tendency for this site to lie to your face).
Now, I own a desktop of a different make with the non-mobile version of the chipset, but at least you can upgrade that.
This is the last time I will buy mainstream brands. I plan to have all my future computers custom-built, or maybe I'll just shell out for an obscene Black Widow and be done with it.

Also, "I know computers," WE may not be as tech-savvy as YOU (although you don't exhibit much computer know-how given the uselessness of your comment, sorry), but that doesn't give you any right to shit on somebody because of a valid complaint over a corporation's ineptitude. I've taken networking, I've worked around IT, and I've realized a lot of IT personnel are full of shit. Sit down.

I agree. DON'T buy Toshiba. I have a laptop that's less than 2 years old. I've been through 3 motherboards. Also the part where you plug the power cord in quit working 3 times and had to be replaced. The same thing has happened to my mom and a friend at work with thte same computer. Toshiba denies knowledge of a common problem with this computer and WILL NOT make it right. TOSHIBA SUCKS. NEVER, EVER< EVER buy a Toshiba computer.

Obviously you do not know enough about computers to be posting what you want us to believe is a technology blog. The memory chips are very easily replaced with a screwdriver. All you have to do is take out the keyboard. Which, if you read the manual that is easily downloaded from Toshiba's website, is not that hard to do.

And just so you know, this is not a money making scheme, the chips are placed the way they are to make the machine small enough for all required components to fit.

Lastly, if you want people to take you seriously and read your blog, do think posting obscene remarks about Toshiba is going to accomplish that?

Calm down my friend. No, I'm not an IT guy, that's true. I'm a regular
user at most. This toshiba model actually don't allow a regular user
to replace or install any extra memory (it says it in its manual).

With this toshiba model, you need to take the notebook to their tech
support and they will charge you a fee to upgrade (or replace) the
memory. Its pretty frustrating to know they just want an extra $50 for
something you could do yourself, if you can guess where that damn mem
slot is. They changed it (information from their manual actually) from
place to place depending on the model and its only accessible by
Toshiba tech staff (according to them, of course you can always tear
the Toshiba in small pieces and find the "hidden" slot by yourself, if
you are a tech guy of course, thing I'm not).

So there you go. Info from the manual. You can't find it by yourself
being a regular user; its not just open a small door and plug it in,
like with other notebooks. Its "hidden" for some weird purpose which
no ones really care.

I'm on my way to buy a Dell in a couple of weeks. Or HP, I'm trying to
compare. We will see!
