Web Sites for the iPhone or how to slow down innovations

Lately I have been seen a lots of web sites blog and online newspapers coming up with their own “iPhone version” of their business. They are everywhere. They usually start with an “i” so, if you where looking EmaStudios web site for the iPhone it will be “http://i.emastudios.com/” which takes my mind back to the old “http://wap.emastudios.com/”. From my point of view, building a web site, blog or newspaper entirely from scratch for a particular device it’s going back to 1995 when AvantGo ruled the world and the “Palms” where “so hot right now!”.

If you have an application like basecamp for example, it’s necessary to do the “iPhone version” but, that’s just because the application needs to be specially designed as an app for the iPhone. On the contrary, having a blog, a news paper or any other web site in the iPhone version is like doing a wap version; useless. There is a huge market for wap, we all know that. But it takes back innovation like 10 years. The browser should adjust the site, not backwards. If you don’t agree, then I’m assuming you are one of the really happy designers or coders who laugh with joy every time you have to do an Internet Explorer version of your work.

Again, the browser should adjust the site, not backwards. In fact, Apple agrees with me. They have come up with Safari for the iPhone, an splendid piece of software that lets you see, AND READ a website like if you where looking it at your own home or work computer. It displays the same. It doesn’t change.

I believe Apple innovates. It’s just that people is used to have “a X version of my website for the X“. Fill the “X” with any new device that you can think off, yesterday Palm, recently cellphone, now, iPhone.Â We have arrived to the era we all have waited: finally, a portable device manufacturer comes up with software that can read our work the same way we intent to, without touching anything, without modifying one line of code; and what do we do? we keep living in the past.

Just let it go!

You are absolutely right in saying that we need to focus on wap which has a huge a target audience as compare to i.WWW so in stead of reducing the potential reader for our website, we have to extend the size. Thanks

Slowing down the innovations isn't the only solution. The planet needs innovation, in a good way of course. We are all scared by the thought that innovation will destroy us, but maybe, someday, these innovations will help our wordl.

Interesting opinion. Still I think it's also some kind of innovation, that type of websites. In the end it can't stop someone (for example Apple) from thinking out something new, in the end it's resourses of "iPhone version" web sites owners that have been wasted.

You got your point on that one, technology is evolving fast and Iphone is gaining more field in the online world. I wouldn't want to see a different internet interface on Iphone, we should work on improving the web not just change it's looks. Apart from this comment made recently to highlight innovative Android platform has made, I agree. I'ma fan of Apple hands down and would love an iPhone. Unfortunately I can not force me to leave Verizon, which has excellent coverage in my area to switch to AT & T, which is less than the lack of coverage in my area. So I'm waiting patiently for Verizon to get either a) a phone powered android. OR b) the iPhone

All this is so true, I think mobile phone and combined internet technology has been evolving so fast in the last 10 years it has been hard for some people to keep up. I do miss the days of wap pages but it’s so great to be able to use my affiliate website and watch youtube videos when I commute to work on the train.

Agreed. This is why protocol exists. Phones and other devices should only be concerned with servicing the most commonly adopted protocols for serving up alternative versions of content.

why to slow down innovations? As long as you can keep up with your recent innovation and don't do it like google - Come up with something new, advertise it and get a lot of users... Then just abandon it.

OK but on Safari for iPhone u say it shows the page xactly like it is but wouldn't it be like soooo tiny? Wouldn't that make it hard 2 read? I mean, it is hard 2 see all a site has on your regular computer sometimes, how can u do it on an iPhone?

i agree completely - let the browser adjust for the phone. otherwise you've got a lot of redundant work going on, discrepancy issues creep in, etc. seems much more efficient the way you propose.

I thinks it's important for some sites to develop iPhone versions. As the iPhone becomes more and more popular people are going to come to expect a site to have an iphone app or iPhone optimized site. It's much easier browsing a site made for the iPhone than having to zoom and and out to see and click different things on the page.

Totaly agree, the Iphone optimized web site turn back in the past, like "netscape 4 o internet explorer 5" optimized site (or the ugly 800x600 screen resolution and 16bit colour!)!

The browser will adapt the site for the device, not the coder adapt a site for the device and is simple, need only a Css optimized and good Xhtml code.

About the url...i.domain.ext is only confusion for the user.
